Re-Skimming

Plaster can be applied onto almost any surface with the correct prep work. Re-skimming (or just ‘skimming’) is a general term which refers to plastering over the top of existing plaster. Normally customers will ask for re-skimming when their walls are already in fairly good condition but they would like them to be totally free of cracks, dents, knocks and any others blemishes.

External Rendering

Rendering exterior walls is the process where external wall coverings are applied with render to protect the blocks or bricks from which the building is constructed. Normally, it is covered with a thin coat of paint or any wall coating to protect the render surface from erosion or cracks. You need good maintenance of the wall covering if the exterior walls of your building are rendered to prevent instances of water ingress and penetration of damp through the render finish into the house.

Plasterboarding

Plasterboard is also sometimes referred to as wallboard or drywall, and it’s typically used for walls and ceilings to create a smooth finish. Plasterboard is made from gypsum (calcium sulphate dihydrate) that’s mixed with water before being layered between two large sheets of paper to create a sturdy board.

Coving

Coving is normally a fairly simple moulding that runs around the border of a room where the wall meets the ceiling. It will project down the wall and across the ceiling the same amount. For example, if the coving covers 100mm (4 inches) from the ceiling down the wall (height), most of the time it will also cover 100mm from the wall across the ceiling (projection).

Artexing

Artex is a surface coating often used for interior decorating purposes. You will usually find it on ceilings, but it can also be found on walls. Artex can be used to add professional-looking patterns and textures to the home. It was a huge trend to have Artex on your ceilings and walls in the 70s and 80s, so it can often be found in slightly older homes. Just some of the Artex styles include knifed plaster, stipple, and swirl. It can also be used to give a bobbly and uneven look all over.
